This is certainly the box described in the catalogue of the Gaignat sale in 1768 as ‘presque quarree, d’ecaille coulee a charniere, le dessus represents un rhinoceros sur terrasse & arbres a cote’. As was usual in the eighteenth century, the maker of the box was not mentioned.
