Le Bastier Enamel Snuff Box

Le Bastier Enamel Snuff Box
Gold, enamelled in green and grey and set with an enamel portrait miniature. Maker Charles Le Bastier. Paris, 1771-2. Mr and Mrs Charles B. Wrightsman. An almost identical box, made by Le Bastier in the same year, is in the Louvre (Nocq and Dreyfus, Catalogue . . ., no. 65). It differs from this only in the miniature and in the substitution of rosettes for garlands on the cover and bottom. A third version is in a private collection; identical to the Louvre example, it is dated 1773-4. The miniatures on the two latter boxes are enamelled with classical subjects, suggesting that the miniature on this version is a replacement.
