Jean-Pierre Ador Snuff Box

Jean-Pierre Ador Snuff Box
Varicoloured gold. On the cover, a medallic portrait of Catherine II signed waechter; on the base, a medal commemorating the accession of the Empress in 1762. Maker Jean-Pierre Ador (w. 1770-85). Russian (St Petersburg), 1774. Wartski, London. There were two medallists named Waechter active in St Petersburg during Catherine’s reign, Georg Christian (1729-89) and his brother, Johann Georg (1724-97). While both executed medals in honour of Catherine’s accession in 1762, the medals on this box are probably by Georg Christian who is recorded as having executed several other medals commemorative of the Empress’s reign
