Jean Guerin Snuff Box

Jean Guerin Snuff Box
Papier-mache, with gilt decoration on imitation tortoiseshell ground. Maker Jean Guerin (d. 1797). German (Brunswick, Stobwasscr factory), 1763-72. State Museum, Brunswick. A native of Clermont, Guerin settled in Brunswick in 1763 and married a sister of J. H. Stobwasser four years later. This box must have been made before 1772 when Guerin established a branch of the factory in Berlin. Like the majority of papier-mache snuffboxes its shallowness is compensated for by greater length (5.75 in.)
