JJ DeGault Paris Snuff Box

JJ DeGault Paris Snuff Box
Gold, with grisaille miniatures by Jacques-Joseph DeGault of the Triumphs of Alexander, after paintings by Charles Le Brim. On the cover, the entry of Alexander into Babylon. Inscribed Le Brun and signed JJ DeGault. Paris, 1779-80(?). The Cleveland Museum of Art. The immediate source of DeGault’s miniatures was undoubtedly a series of engravings by Sebastien Le Clerc (1637-1714) of Le Brim’s paintings. They were reissued in Paris in 1784: it is thus possible that the miniatures on this box are later than the apparent date of the box itself
